Fort Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina

America's most tragic conflict ignited at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, when a chain reaction of social, economic and political events exploded into civil war. At the heart of these events was the issue of states rights versus federal authority flowing over the underlying issue of slavery. A visit to Fort Sumter National Monument in South Carolina should be on any visitors list -- a must see.

  • Fort Sumter is a great day out for people of all ages. The boat ride there was great too. Fun and interesting at the same time - the Organisers of the tour give you a great insight into the Civil War and it's outcomes. Highly recomended.
