College of CharlestonCollege of Charleston Average User Rating: (0 votes, add your vote or comments) Founded in 1770 and chartered in 1785, the College of Charleston is the oldest institution of higher education in the state of South Carolina and the thirteenth oldest in the United States. The College provides high quality education in the arts and sciences, education and business. Since its founding in 1770, the College of Charleston has retained a strong liberal arts undergraduate curriculum. The Cistern Yard is the center of the campus in historic downtown Charleston flanked by Randolph Hall (built in 1828) and the Towell Library. Porter's Lodge opens up onto George Street at the opposite end of the yard. The College of Charleston is one of the venues for the annual Spoleto festival.
