The 300-year-old city’s historic district encompasses more than 2,000 buildings: 73 predating the Revolutionary War, 136 dating from the 1700’s and more than 600 others that were built in the 1800’s. The Battery, the waterfront along the edge of the historic district, offers fine views of the harbor. North of The Battery along E. Bay Street is a particularly colorful collection of houses known as Rainbow Row. Graceful antebellum homes adorn Charleston’s South Battery evoking the spirit of gracious living reminiscent of the city’s merchant elite. Known for its wealth of churches, theatres, and other performance spaces, as well as being the first American city to have its own ballet and theater companies, Charleston was selected by the Festival of Two Worlds as the site of the annual Spoleto Festival. Promoting a broad range of artistic styles and forms, including classical ballet; modern and post-modern dance; opera; chamber, symphonic, and choral music; jazz; theater; and visual arts, Spoleto packs the city for 17 days each May and June providing top notch entertainment for all ages. Charleston is home to three top-tier research universities: Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), University of South Carolina, and Clemson University. Other famous institutions of higher learning include The Citadel and the College of Charleston. Charleston is becoming a tourist hotspot offering natural beauty, world-class culture and historic charm. Greater Charleston is comprised of three counties: Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester, strategically located on the Atlantic coast about half-way between New York and Miami.
